Taking Pictures

The purpose of my blog is to showcase what goes on behind the scenes as a newspaper photographer. Covering the technical and creative aspects of selected pictures as well as the stories behind them.

Bullsbrook mural

13/04/2011

In June 2009, I was leaving a job out in Bullsbrook (45min out of Perth) when I noticed someone painting a mural on the side of a shipping container in a car park.

As I was walking to my car, I was thinking whether or not I approach the artist to see if I could take her photo and possibly run it in The Advocate newspaper, which is the paper for the Bullsbrook area and.... more »

Swimmer Kris Taylor

15/03/2011

Over the past year I have done a number of short term branch swaps with fellow Community Newspaper Group photographer, Justin Benson-Cooper. These ranged from two to four weeks and enabled both of us get out of our daily routine and into a different area.

Justin works for the Myaree branch of CNG, covering for the Southern Gazette and Canning Times papers. I’m quite familiar.... more »

JPG vs. RAW

26/02/2011

Between 2002 and 2009 I shot all my Community photos in JPG. Over those years I had occasionally tried to process a RAW photo (less than 10 times), but the shear time it took up to open up a RAW photo on my computer was almost enough to put anyone off using it. Once I got the photo open, I unfortunately didn’t have a clue as to how to process the image so I just stuck to shooting in.... more »

Gravity taking hold

10/02/2011

The Gravity Discovery Centre (www.gravitycentre.com.au), a science education centre located about 1 hours drive from Perth, got a brand new dome projector in their cosmology gallery in June 2010.

The Advocate was doing a story about the new projector, so I travelled up with journalist Lucy Rickard to check it out.

Carrying everything but a tripod, we meet Brad.... more »

Jumping the javelin

30/01/2011

The subject for this assignment was James Tolich, a young athlete who had just returned from an international athletics competition in Singapore. James is both a talented triple jumper and a javelin thrower, so I wanted to try and capture some shots that could tie the two together.

The location for the original booked job was at a local park, where I had a feeling wasn’t used.... more »

My tools of the trade

30/01/2011

Some people think I’m an ‘equipment junkie’, and they’re probably right. This addiction only started last year, as I wanted to push my photographic boundaries to the absolute limit and not be limited by the equipment I was using.

Don’t get me wrong, the equipment I’m provided with is top notch but I just wanted to put a clear, distinguishable look to my photos so people.... more »

Local CSI Detective

27/01/2011

In July 2010 I had an assignment to photograph a forensic officer down at the local Midland Police station. Straight away I’m thinking of a shot that looked like something you would see in the police labs of the TV show CSI Miami, however one thing I was told in my early days at Community was to not prepare for a certain shot just incase it doesn’t happen.

Journalist Nic.... more »

Portrait of Robert Juniper

27/01/2011

When you photograph someone multiple times, my personal challenge is to capture something different than the previous shoot.

Robert Juniper, regarded as one of Australia’s best artists was releasing his third book, and I was asked to photograph him to promote a new book about his life and works titled ‘Robert Juniper’ (written by Gavin Fry).  This was also to be the third time.... more »
