PERSONAL experience of skin cancer and seeing loved ones succumb to the disease has spurred Duncraig resident Peter Collins to raise more than $100,000 for melanoma research in just three years.

He is helping co-ordinate the Scott Kirkbride Melanoma Research Centre’s annual fundraising social day on February 27 at Ascot Racecourse – for the fourth time.

Last year’s event raised more than $30,000.

Part of the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research, the centre was established in 2005 in memory of Scott Kirkbride, who died from melanoma at the age of 27.

Mr Collins said the death of Mr Kirkbride, a close family friend, made this a cause close to his heart.

“Spending a lot of time in the sun can come back to haunt you and I count myself lucky that while I’ve had many small, common skin cancers cut out, thankfully they have not threatened my life,” he said.

Entry to the fundraiser costs $50.

Prizes include interstate trips and a motor scooter.
