MUMS are putting down their teacups and picking up their surfboards this summer.

Once a week these thrill-seeking gals grab their kids and head to Trigg Beach where they swap childminding duties for catching waves.

They are members of Surfing Mums Perth, the local branch of an international organisation (not for profit) that operates as far as Spain.

Perth division co-ordinator and Willagee resident Claire Romea-Gorton enjoys the coast with sons Charlie (5) and Zack (4).

“Before you have kids you’re an independent person and after you have kids you become a desperately dependent person,” Mrs Romea-Gorton said.

“It’s a big relief for mums – to go and get out of the house for a surf and to meet other mums.

“A lot of mums say it has helped with post-natal depression; many say that getting out in the surf and breathing the fresh air has helped.”

The local club comprises about 25 mothers, and 50 children ranging from babies to teens.

About six mums attend a session. Half surf while the others stay on the beach with the youngsters.
