GOOSEBERRY Hill’s Robin Jeffery teamed up with fellow Perth kayaker Kynan Maley to win at the 2010 Oceania Open at Penrith’s Whitewater Stadium late last month. The pair won the men’s C2 event.

Maley and Jeffery have only recently teamed up to contest the C2 class and have already enjoyed great success in spite of having to borrow an older C2 boat.

“We’re hoping to improve on our times as we’ve just taken delivery of a top racing lay-up C2,” Jeffery said.

Jeffery and Maley relocated to Penrith in NSW as WA no longer has a white water venue.

“There’s a big push for an artificial course in Perth and all the West Australian paddlers in Penrith would be keen to move back home if that happened,” Maley said.

More than 200 athletes from 19 countries competed in the Oceania Open. These races were also the first leg of the selection races for the 2010 Australian Canoe Slalom Team that will compete later this year in the World Cup races in Spain, Germany, the Czech Republic and the World Championships in Slovenia.

Maley and Jeffery will compete again at the remaining selection races this weekend at the difficult Brady’s Lake course in Tasmania.

Both men are also competing in the C1 class and if successful will represent Australia in two classes, in accordance with new International Canoe Federation rules.
