THE Matilda Bay Brewing Company, formerly based in North Fremantle, was among several WA groups that took top honours at the 2009 Perth Royal Beer Show held at Claremont Showgrounds.

The company was named the champion commercial brewery and had the best wheat beer, according to the 22 judges who allocated a maximum of 20 points to each beer.

Chief judge Brendan Varis said it was pleasing to have iconic WA beer brewers and progressive boutique brewers sharing the spotlight.

“Standards were high this year, and in particular the winners of gold medals.

“And there were some interesting experimental beers entered this year.

“They represent an opportunity for brewers to explore further over the next few years, and their commercial potential could be most interesting,” he said.

Other winners included Mash Brewing in Henley Brook that won the prizes for best stout and lager draughts, Billabong Brewing in Myaree had the best stout and Margaret River’s Colonial Brewing Co won the Cryer Malt trophy for the best commercial beer for its Colonial Kolsch.

The latter also won the Barrett Burston trophy for the best ale draught and the Premier’s Trophy for the show’s best WA beer.

There were about 300 entries from 65 exhibitors.
